Phoenix Firecamp 2016 graduated 15 teenage girls, ages 15-19, from an intensive annual training week conducted by Fire Service Women of NYS, Inc. (FSWNYS). The program, aimed to interest young women in joining the fire and emergency services, began in 2007 and to date there are 184 graduates.
Of the 24 female instructors and team leaders, there were 18 from New York state volunteer departments, three from the FDNY, one each from the Rochester, Syracuse, and Buffalo Fire Departments, and one from a corporate fire department. Additional staff members from Montgomery County (MD) Fire & Rescue and Constable (Canada) Fire Department participated this year. FSWNYS welcomes qualified women firefighters from throughout the United States and Canada to apply for a staff position, understanding that the staff is entirely volunteer and pay all their own expenses.
