The Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center Fund was established over 30 years ago to support burn prevention and burn care throughout Suffolk County. It does so by funding the Burn Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center, the only designated burn care facility for the more than 1.5 million Suffolk County residents and over 10,000 fire/EMS personnel. The 7,200-square-foot center coordinates burn services throughout the region and conducts training and research in burn care. At the burn center, patients receive quality care provided by a highly specialized burn team, including surgical critical care physicians and nurses, and respiratory, physical, and occupational therapists.
Now, in addition to all the support from firefighters and fire departments all over Suffolk County, the fund has another sponsor. A firefighter and EMT from the Halesite Fire Department, Stephen Medici, has pledged 100 percent of the royalties from his latest novel directly to the fund. The book is titled Wellington Redemption and focuses on a young man’s desire to start his life over again, a subject the author knows something about.
"When I retired, I felt I needed to do something to support our community. The SCVFBC is a phenomenal organization that does so much good work. So, I hope my book will help raise some much-needed funding and awareness," said Medici. His prior novels have supported the Harry Chapin Food Bank, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and The Fresh Air Fund.
Dawn Meyer, the president of the SCVFBCF said, "We’re happy to see our work is being recognized, particularly by the local firefighters and their families. Dr. Sandoval, the medical director of the burn center at Stony Brook, does such wonderful work. I’m happy we now have another source of funding for his team and their good work."
Wellington Redemption is available in paperback and as a Kindle book from Amazon. It is also available at the Book Review in Huntington, NY.
