There are some great book specials happening at the NYSAFC Book Store. The "Fall Book Sale" offers 25 percent off all titles. Jeremy Rodd, book store manager, has highlighted three of them:
Fire and emergency service administrators, supervisors, and emergency responders are the intended audience for the third edition of the IFSTA
Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellness Manual. With the goal of establishing a culture of safety within the fire and emergency services, the manual provides a review of the dominant culture that contributes to the current level of injuries and fatalities sustained by the service. Methods for creating a new safety-based culture grounded on changes in personal behavior and organizational change is recommended. The manual then outlines the requirements for health and fitness programs, as well as training, apparatus, tool and equipment, protective clothing, emergency scene, and facility safety. Finally, an outline for developing and implementing a safety, health, and wellness program is provided.
A new format and new illustrations add to a reorganization of the second edition of
Fire Investigator from IFSTA. The book contains a heavy emphasis on origin and cause determination with expanded information about fire pattern analysis. Basic skills investigators should have are outlined, including: safe practices for conducting an investigation, effects of fire and explosion science on fire investigation, building construction and building services, investigative process protecting, documenting, and collecting evidence, conducting interviews, scene examination and reconstruction, area of origin determination, and ignition source, sequence, and cause determinations.
Fire Investigator is designed to provide fire investigators with the information, data, and resources necessary to meet the job performance requirements for fire investigators as defined in NFPA® 1033.
Structural Fire Fighting: Truck Company Skills and Tactics second edition from IFSTA is designed to be a resource for those who engage in "truck work" on the fireground. Building on concepts introduced in the Essentials of Fire Fighting, this manual provides more detailed information on topics like forcible entry, fireground search and rescue, horizontal and vertical ventilation, rapid intervention, loss control, and many other responsibilities traditionally assigned to truck companies.
