Legislative Session Wrap-Up

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

This year’s legislative session in Albany was one of the most "interesting" in many years. Although there have been sessions in the past that ran long and were contentious, it was usually over a late budget. This year it was on legislative issues. There were several bills of interest that will be delivered to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his consideration.

We are pleased that two of the items on the list below are from the NYSAFC Legislative Agenda and the "Issues of United Concern." Click here to find out specifics on each bill and track its progress.

Below you’ll find the bill numbers and brief descriptions of the bills that will be delivered to the governor. The list is based on the bill number for the bill that will be sent to the governor’s office, not based on priority. Click here to contact the governor’s office.

A. 1007 Weisenberg, S. 928 Marcellino – Prohibits insurance companies from refusing to issue or renew an automobile insurance policy when the motor vehicle to be insured is used for fire fighting.

S.4655 SKELOS, A. 5933 Weisenberg – Provides that firefighters who die in the line of duty have their names inscribed on the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

S.4621 YOUNG, A.7311-A – Increases to thirty-one members the State Emergency Medical Advisory Committee of the State Emergency Medical Services Council.

A.7672 Sweeney, S. 5444 ZELDIN – Provides reimbursement to fire companies for costs associated with responding to spills of hazardous materials.

A.7919 Sweeney, S 5483 MARTINS – Relates to blue lights on ambulances, emergency ambulance service vehicles and county emergency medical services vehicles.

There are several items still on the table at the end of the session. NYSAFC remains committed to working with Governor Cuomo, the Legislature, and other fire service associations on moving the fire service agenda forward.
