In honor of the 10th Anniversary of September 11, the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance published a beautiful, full-color book, Heroes: The Fallen Heroes of September 11, 2001. It tells the remarkable story of ordinary people taking on an extraordinary task, to properly honor New York City’s heroic firefighters, police officers and law enforcement officers.
Through stories, pictures, and quotes, the book tells how the memorial began with one man’s love of Brooklyn, the Dodgers, and Coney Island, and evolved into a powerful and moving tribute to courage. It is a story of the remarkable generosity of spirit that would bring together Sol, a team of dedicated volunteers, and the help of both the famous and the unknown, to make the memorial a reality.
Today, 417 granite portraits make up the memoria. All of them are included in the book. It is a uniquely Brooklyn kind of story. The book also includes a full-color foldout showing the entire Wall of Remembrance and Tribute Walk.
In addition, the foundation has donated copies of the book to each of the families. With the help of additional donors, copies of the book will be given to each fire house, as well as New York City public libraries. A copy was also donated to NYSAFC and is available for viewing at the association office.
All proceeds from the book go to support the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance (Ebbett's Field) Foundation. The book sells for $20, and the foundation offers a special discount for the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs.
