NYSAFC Announces Upcoming Education Program Lecturers
NYSAFC is pleased to announce additional details on its upcoming education programs, including the Emergency Services Leadership Symposium, Company Officers Leadership Training (COLT) "Riding Forward," and the Fall 2012 Seminar Series. Registration forms for all programs will be available on the NYSAFC website later this summer.
Battalion Chief Robert Burns, Fire Department City of New York (FDNY), Chief Mike Lombardo, Buffalo Fire Department, and Corporal Mark O’Brien, United States Marine Corps, will participate in the NYSAFC Emergency Services Leadership Symposium, which will be held October 25-26, 2012, at the Binghamton Riverwalk Hotel & Conference Center in Binghamton, N.Y.
Workshops will include "Leadership in the Real World" with Burns, "Trust and the Command Officer" with Lombardo, and "Safety Survival from a U.S. Marine’s Perspective: Three Key Weapons to Win the War Against Accidents" with O'Brien. Burns continuously provides thoughtful lectures applicable to fire service leaders of all ranks. O’Brien's keynote address during NYSAFC's Annual Conference & Expo was a tremendously moving and inspirational talk with many lessons relevant to the fire service leader, so the association has asked him to return for an additional speaking engagement. And look for Lombardo's insightful article, "Training and the Company Officer" in the next issue of SIZE UP magazine, which will be out in September. Learning and leadership are inseparable in the fire service. There are many programs available on fireground strategies and tactics, but this symposium provides an opportunity for the advancement of leaders on and off the emergency scene.
Company Officers Leadership Training (COLT) "Riding Forward" will be held November 30 – December 1, 2012, at the Crowne Plaza White Plains in White Plains, N.Y. and April 12-13, 2013, at the Marriott Rochester Airport in Rochester, N.Y. The workshops and speakers at both COLT programs are: "Fire Station Leadership – Essentials That Will Transform Your Fire Station and Your Life" with Retired Battalion Chief Mark Emery, Woodinville (WA) Fire & Rescue, and "From the Fire House to the Fireground: What You Need to Know" with Lieutenant Tim Klett, Fire Department City of New York (FDNY), and Chief Mike Lombardo, Buffalo Fire Department.
Chiefs that recognize the need for leadership development for their company officers to preserve the future of the fire service send them to NYSAFC's COLT program for this critical training. It's also crucial for chief officers to support those individuals performing the day-to-day operations of the fire department, as sharpening the leadership skills of your line officers will enhance the overall strength of your team. This program is geared specifically toward the line officers and team leaders who will ensure that your department moves forward efficiently, thoughtfully, and safely into the future.
NYSAFC previously announced the program and speakers for the upcoming Fall 2012 Seminar Series "Modern House Fires: Strategic & Tactical Considerations for Success" with Lieutenant Chris Flatley, Fire Department City of New York (FDNY), and Training Officer Jerry Knapp, West Haverstraw Fire Department.
Sites for the series have been announced. Counties will include: Broome, Dutchess, Genesee, Oneida, Schenectady, and St. Lawrence. Dates and more details will be announced later this summer.
In this seminar, you’ll learn the hazards associated with the modern house fire and strategic and tactical solutions to consider to make your department safe and efficient at these fires – our most important and dangerous alarm, yet one that we’re too often unprepared for.
Keep an eye on the NYSAFC website this summer for more program updates!
