Fire Officer Leadership Development Workshop
NYSAFC is pleased to offer a free, seven-hour Fire Officer Leadership Development Workshop at four locations within New York state later this year.
This workshop incorporates skills that are vital for the modern fire officer. Course segments include the best practices for leadership as they relate to different fire service needs and priorities. Workshops are being offered as part of NYSAFC’s Fire Officer Leadership Development Training Program, funded by a NYS DHSES grant. This program seeks to enhance fire officer leadership development and increase the capacity of fire departments statewide to conduct successful recruitment and retention campaigns.
Segment one will teach the basic principles of NYSAFC’s "7 Habits of Highly Effective Firefighters" program, which is modeled after the renowned Franklin-Covey leadership skills development program. Participants will receive copies of the "7 Habits" training materials, including a Franklin-Covey planner and task matrix.
Segment two will review essential techniques to market a fire department as a community asset and ways to effectively deal with the media in both emergency and non-emergency situations. It will include hands-on time for participants to practice and hone their media relations skills in front of a television camera.
Segment three will highlight effective recruitment strategies, addressing the fire officer’s role in developing and implementing successful recruitment and retention activities.
