Association Mourns the Loss of Past President Arthur W. Lewis
Arthur W. Lewis, who served as president of NYSAFC from 2000-2001, passed away on July 22, 2017. He joined the fire service in 1953 and served as chief of the Freeport Fire Department in Nassau County from 1976-1977. Lewis previously served as deputy chief from 1974-1975, held all company offices within the department, and was a 64-year member and ex-captain of the Bayville Hose Company No. 3. He also was a past warden, with service on many fire department committees.
Lewis was an active member of numerous state and county fire service organizations, including the Fire Chiefs Council of Nassau County. He served as president of the Nassau County Firemen's Association (1976), president of the Executive Council of Firematic Associations of Nassau County (1982-1983), chairman of the Second Battalion Fire District (1985), and Nassau County director for the Southern New York Volunteer Firemen's Association. Lewis also was a member of the South Shore Volunteer Fire Department's Association and an original member of the Vocational Education and Extension Board's Advisory Committee. A longtime member of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York, Lewis was a past president of the board of trustees for the FASNY Firemen's Home and served as a trustee from 1982-1992.
A member of NYSAFC since 1974, Lewis served on the Conference Committee from 1977 until his election to the board of directors in 1992. His father, Kenneth, also served as a member of the NYSAFC board of directors for many years.
Lewis served in the United States Army from 1957-1959.
