The declining number of volunteer firefighters in New York is not a new problem, but it's one Governor Kathy Hochul wants to tackle this year.
 
To combat dwindling numbers of volunteer firefighters across the state, Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed a pair of options she is seeking to have enacted this year: possible compensation for volunteers and a state stipend after firefighters attend mandated training classes.

Newly announced decontamination protocols reduce firefighters' exposure to toxic contaminants by 85 percent. OFPC is expanding classes and trainings to include cancer awareness and prevention education. An educational video has been released to raise awareness of the cancer risk and detail decontamination protocols.
