AGC encourages members and chapters to get involved in the week’s various safety events
This year’s National Construction Safety Week will start Monday, May 6 with an official kick-off safety event being hosted by Sound Transit, which serves the Seattle metropolitan area. AGC of America is the first-ever signature sponsor for National Construction Safety Week, the annual industry-led event designed to highlight steps construction firms are taking to improve jobsite health and safety. AGC of America CEO Stephen E. Sandherr will participate in the Seattle event to outline the industry’s commitment to worksite health and safety.

As of Feb. 7, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires all contractors to evaluate crane operators under the new final rule regulating crane operator qualification and evaluation. AGC of America has spent nearly 16 years working with OSHA under three different presidential administrations to make this rule less burdensome and provide the greatest positive safety impact possible. Our mission to help AGC members does not stop when the ink dries on regulations impacting your construction company. We also want to help ensure you have the information necessary to comply. That is why we created valuable AGC educational resources.

In Line with AGC Recommendations
On Jan. 25, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published its final rule amending the recordkeeping regulation by rescinding—in line with AGC recommendations—the requirement for establishments with 250 or more employees to electronically submit information from OSHA Forms 300 (Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses) and 301 (Injuries and Illnesses Incident Report). AGC called for this amendment because (1) information in the Form 301 could lead to the public disclosure of individual employees’ identity and private health information; and (2) data included in the forms could unfairly characterize a construction contractor’s safety and health record. These establishments will continue to submit information from their OSHA Form 300A (Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses) as has been required in 2017 and 2018.

AGC of America, supported by Susan Harwood Federal Training Grant, developed the Fall Prevention Safety Training Program. Construction workers make up approximately 4 percent of the country’s workforce but account for an average of 19 percent of all job-related fatalities each year. Consistently, over the past five years approximately 35-39 percent of those fatalities are from falls. Falls account for the greatest number of fatalities in the construction industry, especially among small businesses and businesses with Hispanic workers. In addition, fall protection violations continue to be among the most-cited standards in the construction industry. AGC of America is pleased to offer this one-day training program based on OSHA standards and best practices to answer the need for quality training within the industry. Classes are offered at various locations and dates throughout the year. MARCH CLASSES March 11 and 12, 2019Oregon-Columbia Chapter For contact information, click here.

The Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania (MBA) recently presented its inaugural Safety Champion Award. The MBA’s Risk Management Committee established the Safety Champion Award to recognize an individual who is known within their company as a person who consistently practices the safety leadership skills needed to create a strong jobsite and organizational safety climate. The criteria for the award was created from the safety leadership skills outlined in the Foundations for Safety Leadership (FSL) developed by researchers at CPWR, The Center for Construction Research and Training.
