Gilbane, a member of multiple AGC chapters, was proud to join Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee, Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) President and CEO Kelly Fredericks, Rhode Island Military Organization (RIMO), military organizations and local businesses recently at the long-awaited dedication of Theodore Francis Green Airport’s new military lounge. The lounge, one of only two of its kind in the country managed entirely by volunteers rather than by the USO, is a place where members of the military can meet family and friends upon their return from deployment or departure to a new station.

"Many Rhode Island partners — businesses, nonprofits, unions, the military, government, civic organizations and volunteers – worked together to ensure servicemen and women and veterans and their families have a place to regroup and relax at the airport before or after a flight," said Gov. Chafee.

RIAC, in partnership with RIMO, donated the space for the lounge, which will provide snacks, drinks, internet, and television as well as information about RI military and veterans’ programs. Gilbane Building Company stepped up to manage the construction of the project, soliciting labor and materials donations from the company’s extensive subcontractor network, obtaining necessary permits, and scheduling the work. The Rhode Island Building Trades Council donated manpower including carpenters, electricians and painters.

"We’ve worked with RIAC on several major initiatives to improve traveler experience at T.F. Green," said Paul Tierney, Gilbane senior project manager. "We recognize the dedication and sacrifice our military veterans make, and we were honored to serve as the project manager on this new lounge on their behalf. The teamwork and commitment of the people of Rhode Island was incredible.

To give members of the military a sense of ownership of the lounge, a shadow box will be donated by the National Guard Association of Rhode Island for visitors who want to leave a command coin, and the walls will have revolving artwork provided by a local art therapist who works with service members suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

"The success of this project is due to the astounding support from the people in the greatest little state in the nation," said Lori Ashness, vice chair of RIMO. "The generosity and support we have received from RIAC, numerous donors and countless volunteers will continue the success of the military lounge at T. F. Green Airport for many years to come. Having the airport lounge will be a comfort to servicemen and women traveling on behalf of our country."
