McCarthy Building Companies Earns Top Honors at AGC Build Georgia AwardsPrint this Article | Send to Colleague McCarthy Building Companies Southeast Division has been recognized by AGC Georgia for its work on the Georgia Institute of Technology Engineering Biosystems Building and the Georgia State University College of Law building. Both projects earned First Place Honors in their respective construction groups and First Place in Best Sustainable Building Practices Division and will be recognized at the upcoming 2016 AGC Build Georgia Awards.
The new $91-million Engineered Biosystems Building (EBB) at the Georgia Institute of Technology is a 220,000-sq-ft building featuring office space and flexible interdisciplinary laboratories for engineers and scientists. The new seven-story facility, build on an active academic campus, features large, open laboratories designed to maximize flexibility and collaboration. Sustainable features installed by McCarthy include rooftop photovoltaic panels, low-e glass, sun shades on the exterior of the building, chilled beams and groundwater, rain, and condensation harvesting. Cooper Carry Inc. acted as the head project architect in collaboration with Lake Flato Architects.
The newly-constructed $68-million Georgia State University College of Law building is a LEED Silver Certified facility housed on a 2.42 acre site on the university’s main campus in the heart of downtown Atlanta. The 200,000-sq-ft space is Georgia State University’s first dedicated legal education facility on campus. This modern, sustainable law school includes 21 state-of-the-art classrooms, a conference center, a 230-seat ceremonial courtroom, additional courtrooms of varying sizes for clinical practice and community outreach, and an International Arbitration Center.

The AGC Build Georgia Awards Program is designed to recognize outstanding achievements by Georgia construction firms and honors the talented and dedicated men and women who make up the state’s construction industry.
Eligible projects for this year’s award program were completed in 2015. General contractors and specialty contractors competed in several categories depending upon the size of their firm, the type of project delivery method used, and the type of construction. Award winners were judged on criteria including innovation in construction techniques, safety performance, use of sustainable building practices, excellence in project management and scheduling and dedication to client services.
