AGC Members Hit Jackpot in Vegas

Vegas is an exciting destination at the most mundane of times, but add in AGC’s 95th Annual Convention and CONEXPO-CON/AGG, and the city becomes downright thrilling. Nearly 2,800 attendees descended upon The Bellagio, March 3-6, 2014, for the association’s convention, which delivered education sessions, provided networking events, and launched several exciting initiatives – culminating in a jackpot of information and opportunities for attendees.

From mobile apps to contract negotiations, from a live RFI demonstration to an EPA update, session topics ran the gamut and delivered compelling content for all. Standing room only in the workforce development session highlighted the seriousness of the "war for talent" that exists in the industry today and called for a paradigm shift, with early intervention a key component.

Impressive speakers engaged audiences. Former defense secretary Robert Gates spoke of global crises, Fast Company co-founder and editor Bill Taylor outlined strategies for success, and Captain Richard Phillips recounted his harrowing experience with Somali pirates.

After several days of judging, AGC and Willis announced the 2014 Construction Safety Excellence Award winners. From the 25 first-place finalists, Gray Construction, an AGC of Kentucky member headquartered in Lexington, received the Grand Award, recognizing the contractor as "the best of the best." And, 20 contractor member firms received Alliant Build America awards for the best construction projects across the nation in 2013. Salt Lake City Airport's Light Rail Extension project, by Stacy and Witbeck and Kiewit Western, took home the Grand Award.

During the week, AGC unveiled two new initiatives. "Hardhats for Highways" is a national outreach campaign designed to help educate Congress about the number of local jobs impacted by federal transportation funding. And, in an effort to help member firms reduce their insurance premium costs, the association and Willis North America are offering a new private health insurance exchange

Many convention attendees made their way to CONEXPO-CON/AGG, one of the world's largest construction trade shows being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Cranes, lifts, tractors, tires, concrete products, software technology, safety innovations - anything and everything related to the industry - filled parking lots and convention halls.

As the saying goes, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." But when it comes to the program delivered at AGC’s Annual Convention, folks leave with more than they came: a jackpot of information, friendships and maybe even new business.
