The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Alabama/Gulf Coast Chapter named Hargrove Engineers + Constructors (an Alabama AGC member) Teammate and leukemia survivor Bob Mobley the 2014 LLS Man of the Year on June 12, 2014. Mobley and his teammates raised over $40,000 during the 10-week campaign through a variety of fundraising events, including a clay shoot tournament, chef showdown, beer + bingo and weekly giveaways.

The LLS Man of the Year campaign is personal to Mobley because his life was touched by leukemia twice. In 1989, Mobley’s father passed away four days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. In 2011, Mobley received the same diagnosis, but with research and treatments made available from organizations like LLS, he has been in remission for 30 months and counting.

"The hard work and dedication of LLS, and organizations like it, helped to create medical advances that made my story of survival possible," said Mobley. "By LLS funding groundbreaking research and improving treatment options for those diagnosed with blood cancer, it has helped people like me to find hope and be healthy long after diagnosis - but we still have work to do. 

There are still people that lose the battle with cancer, just like mine and my father’s, every day. Campaigns like this will further the relentless pursuit of a cure."

This year’s campaign was unique in that it set a record for the state of Alabama. The candidates of this year’s 2014 LLS Man and Woman of the Year campaign of the Alabama/Gulf Coast Chapter raised a combined total of $209,265, which is the highest amount raised by any LLS class in Alabama history.

The LLS Man & Woman of the Year campaign is a fundraising competition in communities across the U.S. in which participants vie for the title of Man or Woman of the Year. Participants raise funds for blood cancer research in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. The titles are awarded to the men and women in each community who raise the most funds during the ten-week campaign and the top local fundraisers in the country also win the national titles, according to the LLS website.
