It all started in 1918 at the LaSalle Hotel in Chicago, Illinois, where a small group of contractors banded together to form AGC of America. One hundred years later, the association is 26,000 members strong, with a proud past and even brighter future. How they became and continue to serve as the leading association for the construction industry was summed up recently by AGC CEO Steve Sandherr at the association’s Centennial Celebration in Washington, D.C.: “We are the voice of construction. Maybe we’re not the loudest or the shrillest, but we’re the most credible.”

AGC’s report, The Business Case for Diversity & Inclusion in the Construction Industry, outlines six reasons why diversity and inclusion are strategically valuable in generating corporate/industry innovation, increasing profitability, and ensuring a positive and sustaining legacy of progress for your firm. The conventional understanding of diversity has evolved over time. What started as a focus on compliance of Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action requirements has moved into a critical and necessary part of doing business as a way to achieve greater financial success. As the population of the U.S. becomes more diverse, construction companies will need to reflect the changing demographics in order to find workers and remain competitive. The arguments for a company including diversity and inclusion as a key business strategy go beyond the moral imperative of “doing the right thing” and focus on the measurable financial results that can be achieved. For additional information, contact Brynn Huneke or (703) 837-5376.

On Sept. 24, AGC commented on three proposed rules that would significantly affect the applicability and implementation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The proposed revisions pertain to regulations governing the listing and delisting of species and plants, the designation of critical habitat and the interagency consultations that are part of the approval process for projects that involve federal permits or funding. AGC’s comment letters offered examples of why the current process is unpredictable and adds delay and cost to the permitting and construction of infrastructure projects nationwide.
