AGC CEO says Senate must pass immigration measure that avoids significant disruptions to construction projects in regions with big TPS & dreamer populations 
 
The chief executive officer of AGC of America, Stephen E. Sandherr, released the following statement in response to the passage recently in the U.S. House of Representatives of the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019, a measure to offer conditional green cards and extend work authorizations to individuals who are in the United States under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Action for Children Arrivals (“Dreamers”) programs.

New this year, Future Focus is a supplemental issue of Constructor magazine to be published in the fall, that will hone in on game-changing construction technologies and provide members the resources they need to implement these technological advances. Constructor is currently seeking member sources, willing to speak about the advancements they’ve made, how technology has changed the way they do business and how and why others should follow. With the popularity and complexity of drone technologies, storing and analyzing the data can create challenges for contractors. Members and vendors have taken different approaches to turning that data into useful images and models.

Construction is risky business. According to OSHA, one in every five private sector worker deaths in 2017 (the latest year recorded) was in construction. That’s 971 fatalities. A dedicated wellness program, with an emphasis on physiologically informed safety knowledge, is a smart effort for any construction organization. It helps with injury prevention and differentiating that company as an attractive employer.

Prior to joining the A/E/C industries, Katrina Spinner-Wilson was a sports reporter for a local newspaper where she covered field hockey, wrestling and soccer. Following each game (and on a tight deadline!), she interviewed coaches and players to capture one team’s victory, and, subsequently, another team’s loss. Fast-forward to today — she's a marketer in the A/E/C industries, and still gets to interview people daily to discover how they take a project to the next level.

Lauring Construction, a third-generation general contracting and construction management firm and AGC of Massachusetts member, is performing work at Nichols College, a private business school in Dudley, Mass., to renovate Shamie Residence Hall and Lombard Dining Hall. Lauring has worked with Nichols since 2006 and completed over 20 projects on the 200-acre campus.

TTWiiN Investment Partners, the innovation investment arm of Thornton Tomasetti, a General Building Contractors Association member, has recently invested in XtreeE, a Paris-based technology company focusing on large-scale 3D-printing solutions for the architecture, engineering and construction industry. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

On Saturday, June 8, AGC Georgia Chapter President Kevin Kuntz honored Mike Kenig, vice chair of Holder Construction with the 2019 AGC Georgia SIR Award. The award recognizes Mr. Kenig's outstanding service, leadership and involvement in the construction industry during his distinguished career. This award is the highest honor given to a deserving individual each year at the Annual Convention in June.
