Sixty Percent of Firms Working on Highway Upgrades Experienced Cars Crashing into Their Work Zone During the Past Year, New Data Finds

Annual survey by HCSS and AGC of America finds drivers and passengers are at greater risk of injury and death in work zone crashes as officials urge drivers to be careful this summer

Sixty percent of highway contractors report that motor vehicles had crashed into their construction work zones during the past year, putting motorists and workers at risk, according to the results of a new highway work zone study conducted by AGC of America and HCSS. In response, officials urged drivers to slow down and remain alert while passing through work zones during the summer driving season.

Small Business Administration Begins Forgiving PPP Loans Over $2 Million

As AGC continues to pressure the Small Business Administration (SBA) to change its approach to applications for the forgiveness of Paycheck Protection Loans over $2M, the agency finally appears to be doing just that. The agency has yet to make any announcements and details are still missing. There is, however, a growing body of anecdotal and other evidence that the agency is finally accelerating the process of forgiving these loans. Over the last three business days, AGC has received either first-hand or reliable reports that SBA has forgiven another nine of these loans (over $2M) to AGC members.

Producer Prices for Construction Materials and Services Jump 24 Percent over 12 Months, Threatening Contractors’ Solvency and Workers’ Jobs

AGC calls on President to immediately end tariffs and quotas on steel, aluminum and lumber as first step to easing pressure on construction costs and supply-chain bottlenecks

The cost of goods and services used in construction climbed by a record-setting 4.3 percent in May and 24.3 percent over the past 12 months, jeopardizing contractors’ solvency and construction workers’ employment, according to an analysis by AGC of government data released recently. Association officials urged the Biden administration to move more quickly to end tariffs and quotas that are adding to construction materials costs and availability problems.

443 beds. A hospital-grade liquid oxygen farm. Industrial HEPA filtration. A rapid treatment center, a pharmacy, a laboratory. Building a makeshift hospital is no easy task, and these are just a few of the many features that engineers must often design for. Finishing the job on time in the thick of a pandemic, no less, is another kind of challenge altogether. But federal and local agencies did exactly that in Washington, D.C. at the outset of COVID-19, creating the city’s third largest hospital in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center — and they got it done in just 17 days.

C.W. Driver Companies Starts Construction on New K-8 School in Irvine Unified School District

C.W. Driver Companies, an AGC of California and San Diego Chapter member, recently began ground up construction on Solis Park School, a new K-8 school in Irvine Unified School District (IUSD). Located within District 5 of the Great Park Neighborhoods, Solis Park School will serve approximately 1,000 students in the new community of Rise, as well as future communities located within the Heritage Fields development near the Great Park. The project will be completed in time to open for the 2022-2023 school year.

Poettker Construction Breaks Ground on New Location for Farmers and Merchants National Bank

Recently, Farmers and Merchants National Bank (FMB), in partnership with the City of O’Fallon and Poettker Construction, a member of multiple AGC chapters, broke ground on a new location for FMB in O’Fallon, Ill. This 4,000 -sf facility, part of the Four Points Center development, will be the bank’s seventh area location. The project is anticipated for completion in fall 2021.

Over 200 construction workers from dozens of companies, and their families, received their first COVID-19 vaccination free of charge at a clinic hosted by Tellepsen, AGC Houston and AGC of America. The vaccine clinic is part of a nationwide construction industry vaccination push being organized by the association to protect workers and local communities from the coronavirus.
