Construction employment in the Madison metro area hit a four-year high in February allowing local employers to recruit and train military veterans to help fill those new positions, according to an analysis released by AGC. However, local construction jobs in the area are at risk if Washington continues to make indiscriminate cuts to federal construction programs, association officials warned at a local media event.

On Jan. 1, 2013, Caltrans began implementation of the 2010 Construction Standard Specifications for new projects. It is expected that most, if not all projects, advertised in 2013 will use the 2010 standards. AGC noted significant changes from the 2006 Caltrans Standard Specifications and has led industry efforts to inform and mitigate industry concerns.

AGC of Washington applauds the recent announcement by the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) regarding efforts to speed up the release of retainage on public works projects. L&I said that beginning April 1, it will implement a new policy designed to distribute money more quickly to contractors for projects for which L&I receives complete paperwork.

Recently Bigge Crane and Rigging, an AGC of Colorado Building Chapter member, opened a new Denver location that offers bare rough terrain and crawler crane leasing in the Rockies region. More importantly, the Denver terminal provides a logical waypoint between established Bigge locations in Salt Lake City and their fast-growing regional headquarters in Houston, Tex. Bigge's push into the Plains states is now bearing fruit with new jobs in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri.

Manhattan Construction, an AGC member of several chapters, marked the completion of First Baptist Dallas's landmark campus in downtown Dallas, Tex. at its dedication on April 7. The 500,000-sq-ft facility includes a 3,000-seat Worship Center and sanctuary, with a 150-ft-wide viewing screen spanning two-thirds of the room and seven high-definition projectors making it one of the largest screens in any church in the world.

On Thursday, April 4, the Arkansas Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) recognized King Elementary in Van Buren, Ark. with the 2013 Green Tie Award for Best LEED Project. This is the second year that USGBC Arkansas has presented the Green Tie Awards, which celebrate outstanding projects, companies and individuals for significant achievements in sustainable design and construction. King Elementary was built by Nabholz Construction Services, an AGC of Oklahoma Building Chapter and Arkansas Chapter member, who in 2012 received the inaugural Green Tie Award for Member Firm of the Year.

Suffolk Construction, one of the leading privately held construction management firms in the country, recently celebrated the topping off of the 50-acre Rental Car Center at Boston's Logan International Airport. Suffolk, an AGC member in California, Metropolitan Washington D.C, and Massachusetts, is managing construction of the Massachusetts Port Authority's $300 million complex to consolidate Logan's rental car facilities.
