Construction employment stagnated in August, while the industry unemployment rate fell and a majority of companies reported difficulty finding workers, according to an analysis of new government data and an industry survey by AGC of America. Association officials called for education and immigration reform measures needed to ensure an adequate supply of skilled workers.

This week, the House Appropriations Committee introduced a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the daily activities of the federal government, from the start of the fiscal year (FY) on Oct. 1 through Dec. 15, 2013. The CR will fund the government at current post-sequestration levels of $986 billion, which is nearly $20 billion more than House-passed budget levels for FY 2014 and nearly $70 billion lower than the budget levels passed in the Senate for FY 2014. The CR is necessary because the House and Senate have failed to enact any of their 12 annual appropriations bills. The length of the bill is intended to allow congressional leaders and the president to deal with the need to raise the nation’s debt ceiling and other budget issues without the threat of a government shutdown.

 Tackling any complex, multimillion-dollar construction project is bound to come with challenges. But completing an entire project 4,850 feet underground introduces a whole new dynamic. _resized.jpg) On July 1, 2013, more than 75 years after they were individually established, Associated General Contractors of New Jersey (AGC of NJ) and Building Contractors of New Jersey (BCANJ) merged to create Associated Construction Contractors of New Jersey, or ACCNJ. Governed by 20 trustees, several of whom have served for years on AGC of America contractor committees, ACCNJ represents large and mid-size contractors and construction managers in virtually every segment of the New Jersey construction industry. As the state chapter of AGC of America, the new ACCNJ holds four AGC of America charters: building, heavy, highway and utility.

An AGC of Missouri Young Executives Club Vo-Tech Scholarship of $1,500 was presented to Jacob Kueffer by Lehman Construction. Kueffer is a 2013 graduate of California High School and is enrolled in the Heavy Equipment Program at Linn State Technical College, Linn.

S. W. Cole Engineering, Inc. of Bangor, Maine, an AGC of Maine and New Hampshire member, has acquired Summit CMT, a construction materials testing subsidiary, from CES, Inc., a Brewer-based engineering, sciences and surveying firm. Summit CMT operated from offices in Augusta and Lewiston. CES will retain Summit Environmental Consultants, which it acquired earlier this year, and will continue to operate in Lewiston. Summit CMT staff will move to S. W. Cole offices in Augusta and Gray and will operate under the parent company name, S. W. Cole Engineering Inc., which provides construction materials testing and geotechnical engineering services.

 Kaiser Electric, an AGC of St. Louis member, recently acquired Marchi Electric based in Fenton, Mo. Marchi Electric owner Leo Marchi closed shop after 13 years in business and was hired by Kaiser Electric as a project manager on July 1. Two of his electricians were also hired by Kaiser.
