Due to the shutdown, the U.S. government closed a number of its non-essential services as of Oct. 1, 2013. As a result of [the] congressional stalemate over a spending plan, many key government agencies, upon which employers regularly rely, are also closed and will remain closed for the duration of the shutdown.

Total construction spending hit an unknown level in August because the Census Bureau was unable to release new data as a result of the federal government shutdown according to the AGC of America. Association officials cautioned that the impacts of the shutdown will go beyond data as solicitations for many new construction projects come to a halt.

BOND, a leading 106-year-old construction management and general contracting firm and an AGC member in Connecticut and Massachusetts, has been selected to complete the 120,000-sq-ft comprehensive renovation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Building 2. Part of the Institute’s historic, Bosworth-designed Main Group, Building 2’s renovation marks a significant step in protecting and enhancing MIT’s world-class education and research. The Main Group will celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2016.

In 1985, Astronaut James Van Hoften became the first human being to launch a satellite by hand, having spun and pushed a repaired communications satellite away from the orbiting space shuttle Discovery during a space walk. Twenty-eight years later, Dr. Van Hoften has become the newest member of Cianbro's board of directors, joining the company after being apprised of the opportunity by fellow board member and former NASA colleague, retired Astronaut Rick Hauck. Cianbro is an AGC member in Maine and Maryland.

Gilbane, a member of multiple AGC chapters, was proud to join Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee, Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) President and CEO Kelly Fredericks, Rhode Island Military Organization (RIMO), military organizations and local businesses recently at the long-awaited dedication of Theodore Francis Green Airport’s new military lounge. The lounge, one of only two of its kind in the country managed entirely by volunteers rather than by the USO, is a place where members of the military can meet family and friends upon their return from deployment or departure to a new station.

Intermountain Electric, Inc. (IME) recently announced the addition of Shane Watson as estimator. In this position, Watson is responsible for enhancing the company’s ability to serve a growing number of clients with a wide variety of new projects across all product lines. Watson brings 17 years of experience to his post and is responsible for preparing detailed and conceptual estimates, as well as for presenting and reviewing estimates with clients during pre-construction, design development and construction. IME is an AGC Nevada Chapter, AGC of Colorado Building Chapter and Inland Northwest AGC Chapter member.

Kaiser Electric, an AGC of St. Louis member, recently completed a three-month project to wire the Missouri Governor's Mansion in Jefferson City. The scope of work included furnishing and installing a 300 kilowatt backup generator for the entire power system, replacing an outdated natural gas 20 kilowatt generator that only powered the security system. The historic Neo-Renaissance structure was built in 1871 on the bluffs of the Missouri River, so finding a conspicuous area to place the new generator on the mansion grounds proved to be a challenge.

Southland Industries, one of the nation's largest mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) building systems experts, recently welcomed Kevin J. Coghlan as the company’s new chief financial officer. Mr. Coghlan brings a wealth of experience to Southland, an AGC member in California and Metropolitan Washington D.C., that will be used to enhance the company’s current operations as well as future strategic growth efforts.

The 14,500-sq-ft UMass Memorial Cancer Center at the Marlborough Hospital celebrated its pre-opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony Sept. 10, 2013, in Marlborough, Mass. Tocci Building Companies (Tocci), an AGC of Massachusetts member and recognized leader in virtual design and construction solutions, facilitated the intense intellectual collaboration of the Cancer Center under an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) contract.
