This month, AGC celebrates Building Safety Month, along with other leaders of America’s design and construction industry, promoting resilience as the solution to making the nation’s aging infrastructure more safe and secure. AGC and almost two dozen associations, representing 700,000 members, issued a joint statement on resilience at a special press conference and event on May 13 at the National Building Museum.

The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is looking to partner with AGC chapters and member firms for a nationwide safety stand-down. The agency recently announced a national safety stand-down June 2-6, 2014, to raise awareness among employers and workers about the hazards of falls, which account for the highest number of deaths in the construction industry.

The unemployment rate in construction dropped to the lowest April level in seven years as contractors added 32,000 workers to payrolls in April, bringing industry employment to 6.0 million, the highest level since June 2009, according to an analysis of new government data by the AGC of America. Association officials warned that it is essential to revive and expand training opportunities before the industry runs short of workers.

Associated Construction Contractors of New Jersey (ACCNJ) hosted a Safety Symposium on April 30, 2014, marking the annual Worker’s Memorial Day on April 28 and opening the event with a formal signing of its OSHA alliance, witnessed by more than 50 ACCNJ contractor members and guests, including six representatives from OSHA.

Barton Malow-Hunt-White, a member of multiple AGC chapters, recently announced it has been selected as the general contractor for new Detroit events center. The City of Detroit Downtown Development Authority Board (DDA) approved the recommendation by Olympia Development of Michigan (ODM) at their board meeting on April 9.

Tocci Building Companies, a Boston-area construction manager and an AGC of Massachusetts member, has added design manager Mark Herstein to its team. Herstein will provide structure to support the development and refinement of design for medical and hospital projects. He will also work directly with clients’ internal stakeholders and vendors to manage the design, procurement, cost forecasting, coordination, and installation of specialty medical equipment.
