Since we conducted our first survey to gauge the extent of workforce shortages last fall, we have heard from many of you that the labor market has only become tighter in the intervening 12 months as demand continues to grow for many types of construction in many parts of the country. While it is clear that worker shortages are a growing concern, and in some cases a significant problem, for many contractors, we feel it is important to better quantify where these shortages are taking place, how severe they are, and what steps firms are taking to both cope with tight labor markers and improve the supply of new, qualified workers. That is why we are asking you to take a few minutes to complete the following workforce survey that we prepared.

Business Tips
As the economy continues to improve, more construction businesses are making capital investments to fuel their growth. When business owners and managers consider acquiring equipment, they often think of their payment option as a "lease versus buy" decision. In any economic environment, when preserving owner or shareholder capital is an important goal, financing equipment through a lease or loan will enable your business to preserve its cash.

Last week, the Associated General Contractors of Colorado and the Colorado Contractors Association joined Gov. John Hickenlooper to launch BuildColorado.com, a web-based application that helps Coloradans access careers in the construction industry. The tool was created in response to a rapid rise in the number of jobs available in the industry, contrasted with a shortage of laborers and skilled trades.

The Master Builders' Association of Western Pennsylvania (MBA) is working with the local Pittsburgh business community to promote job recruitment and retention in the region. The coalition spearheading the efforts - the Allegheny Conference on Community Development - created ImaginePittsburgh.com, a searchable job listing platform that promotes opportunities throughout the 10 counties of southwestern Pennsylvania. For the construction industry there are two primary landing pages: The Builders Guild site promotes the labor employment opportunities and the Master Builders' Association page which features the professional positions in the construction industry. Additionally, ImaginePittsburgh.com created a video on careers in the building trades. MBA also teamed with the Allegheny Conference recently to host an informational seminar on how to effectively use images in a company's social media plan.
