Seventy-one percent of construction firms plan to expand their payrolls in 2016 as contractors expect a range of public and private markets to grow, according to survey results released today by the Associated General Contractors of America and Sage Construction and Real Estate. The survey, conducted as part of The Challenges Facing a Growing Industry: The 2016 Construction Industry Hiring and Business Outlook, indicates that contractors foresee a positive year despite tight labor conditions, regulatory burdens and IT security challenges.

Construction firms added 45,000 workers in December as the industry’s unemployment rate declined to 7.5 percent from 8.3 a year ago, according to an analysis by AGC of America. Association officials noted that the robust job gains come as a new industry outlook shows most firms expect to expand their headcount in 2016 amid growing private and public sector demand.

Skanska, one of the world’s leading construction and development firms and a member of multiple AGC chapters, has started construction for Aligned Data Centers’ Phoenix facility located at 2500 W. Union Hills Dr. in north Phoenix. The 550,000 square foot, 65MW facility will be one of the largest data centers in Arizona and will offer the industry’s first offer pay-for-use model to enterprises and service providers looking to reduce risk and improve control of their data center.

C.W. Driver, a premier builder serving the Western U.S. since 1919 and an AGC of California and a San Diego Chapter member, has completed construction on the renovation and modernization of the East Tower Nursing Unit at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, located just east of San Diego in La Mesa, California. The $26 million project delivers facility upgrades local taxpayers approved on the June 2006 voter ballot. Construction on the 71,000-square-foot project began in May 2012 and completed in October 2015.
