A 2012 survey by JBKnowledge Technologies of 450 construction firms found that 30 percent do not use cloud computing. The other 70 percent use it on a limited basis with only 6.5 percent using cloud-based accounting apps. But interest in cloud migration grows. Sage Construction & Real Estate’s last two annual surveys found that the percentage of contractors who view cloud computing as important to their business more than doubled to 35 percent from 16 percent. And there are ways to gain the many benefits of the cloud while still using the tools which you employ.

The construction industry is in the middle of a major change in how tasks are accomplished in the field. The traditional paper-based means to accomplish tasks are fading away and being replaced by innovative mobile-based ways. In the current climate many construction firms have gone the route of utilizing mobile devices and apps to solve for workflow issues. At the 2014 IT Forum Conference in Chicago in early August, James Benham, president, JBKnowledge, Inc., announced that exciting changes may be taking place regarding agcXML. Details are still in the works, but the Construction Open Software Alliance, or COSA, is expected to take the lead on this trailblazing initiative.
