PROJECT MANAGEMENT, DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT AND COLLABORATION - NAVIGATING THE SOLUTION LANDSCAPE FOR YOUR OPERATIONAL PROCESSES
Thursday, Aug. 2, 2016
2:45 - 3:45 p.m.
Christian Burger
Today’s construction software solution landscape is getting rather busy ... and confusing. There are dozens of solutions available today offering functionality around project management, collaboration, document storage and file sharing. There are also Point-solutions which promote the handling of one or more niche tasks very well. This program will examine the various program classifications and how they approach adding value in the project management and field communication and collaboration. This is not so much a critique of specific products within a class as it is a more detailed examination of the product classes and the advantages that each brings to the overall PM, collaboration, and document storage issue. We will also discuss related topics such as long-term storage, security, integration, and access from the field via mobile technology.

On June 21, 2016, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) finalized a new and comprehensive set of rules for the commercial use of small drones in all industries, including construction. This action completes a rulemaking process that the FAA began in February of 2015 – in an effort to meet Congressional demands and to stem a rapidly rising tide of applications for individual exemptions from longstanding rules that make no distinction between manned and unmanned aircraft. Through January 20 of this year, the FAA had granted 3,136 of these exemptions for the commercial use of drones, and significantly, 48% of that total were for uses in the construction and engineering.

This truck has no driver. What’s more, it’s a safety vehicle. One of the most dangerous workplaces in the construction industry is on an active roadway. As reported in Constructor magazine's July/August issue, high-speed vehicles crashing into work zones is a huge concern to the highway construction industry and state DOTs nationwide. One widely used safety measure is the truck-mounted attenuator (TMA), a sacrificial impact-absorbing device mounted on the rear of a truck that can be parked at the beginning of a roadway jobsite. In the case of a moving work zone, such as a line-painting operation, the TMA truck follows at the end of the work party, constantly protecting the rear of the team.
