Gold Winner:
Compass Ironworks
Gap, Pennsylvania
This stair project was designed by the fabricator and was galvanized and powder-coated steel. According to Compass Ironworks, this project was a challenge like no other, particularly with the install because they couldn’t crane through the roof. Not only did the second stair have to clear the floors it attached to once in the well, it also had to clear a massive header. It took an extra three days of work to get the second stair into place with a special carrier. All the railing was stainless, and the Compass Ironworks crew got a serious crash course in creating difficult radii on round bar.
"The stair railing with the horizontal rod created a nightmare of a challenge as the client wanted the sweeping transition everywhere. To create all the smooth transitions horizontally and vertically with the correct radii and space to be visually pleasing was a feat that made us quite happy. The initial request was for completion by Christmas, we managed Easter. The client brags that these stairs are unlike anything else in the world."
