Summer Safety
Safety is a top priority for fabricators, and our August Roundtable Recap focused on six key points to help members create and sustain a strong safety program.
1. Safety is non-negotiable!
2. Always make time for safety training.
3. Have a safety plan in place, make sure that everyone knows that plan. And understands it.
4. Get your insurance company to do a safety walk through your shop.
5. Communicate safety issues, for repair.
6. Safety is protection for both employees, and employers

Gold: Living Design Studios
Title of Entry: The Swoop
Finish Type: Metallic bronze powder coat
Total Labor Hours: 1481
Materials Used: Aluminum
This 60’ tall screen is made of two layers of waterjet-cut, 1/4”-thick plate made with a metallic bronze powder coat. The architect who created the initial design concept allowed modifications by the fabricator to meet budgetary and engineering specifications.
The screen is connected to the building structure with knife plates that pass through seams in the exterior glass wall at each floor. Every connection between the building and the screen, and within the screen itself, has slots to allow for movement caused by weather and from the expansion and contraction of the metal without binding.

Sources are reporting a decrease in output for aluminum, coupled with a slowing of demand for the material. According to results from a recent Reuters poll, the global aluminum deficit could reach 550,000 metric tons in 2019. Consumption is expected to soften across Europe, China and the U.S., as production remains flat over the summer.

Construction firms can fight OSHA violations that stem from employee misconduct.
What happens when a company invests the proper resources into training its employees on safety rules and regulations, but the employee refuses to follow procedures? In certain cases, a company could have a solid defense against potential OSHA violations if they can prove that the behavior stemmed from employee misconduct, rather than company failure to comply with workplace safety laws.
