This outrageous railing was conceived by the architect, who quickly conceded that the final design of the 1/4" infill work would be decided as the artisans in the field annealed, formed, inter-connected and soldered each piece into place. Nestled in the corner of the library with little access for large parts, this non-egress staircase is elliptical on the first flight and becomes a spiral 5 feet into the second flight. Most of the custom handrail was forged in our shop in 6-foot sections. The newels are twisted bundles of 1/4" and 3/8" rod, with the tassels screwed in from the bottom. The collars and mounting bracket were machined. A single bolt passes through the newel into a pre-installed structure within the finished wood stair. That bolt was welded over to become invisible. A free-standing steel stand was clamped at each newel to hold it plumb while the handrail form was finished and then welded to the newel.
