Gold: MDO Welding & Fab
Title of Entry: Floating Deck and Cantilevered Staircase
Total Labor Hours: 700
Materials: Steel and aluminum
Finish: Textured powdercoat finish
This impressive deck and staircase were designed to look like they were floating above the ground. A single column was used under the deck, to preserve the wide open space beneath the staircase. The metal decking and masonry limestone weighed in at an impressive 10,000 pounds, so MDO utilized large, hollow tube sections to carry it on top of the 23-foot deck. They then pieced through the main column on a 45-degree angle with a large rectangular tube, using the deck and stone as a counterweight to hold the stairs - thus avoiding the need for additional support beneath the stairs. The railing is all forged aluminum, crafted in an old world/medieval style design, and the cap rail was custom forged.
Congratulations to MDO Welding & Fab on a spectacular Top Job project! To learn more about the company and its projects, visit them online at www.mdoweldingandfab.com.

Congress is considering legislation that would increase the number of apprenticeship programs available to vets. While there are 1,100 apprenticeship programs currently registered with the Department of Labor, only a small percentage work with GI Bill funds. The Support for Veterans in Effective Apprenticeships Act under consideration could open up as many as 900 further apprenticeship programs for vets. It has already been passed in the Senate, and will soon go for a committee hearing in the House.

Chilean mining minister Baldo Prokurica said this week that copper prices are expected to rebound over the next several months, after a downturn triggered by the recent coronavirus outbreak in China.
Although China is now reporting lower levels of infections or deaths, the World Health Organization is still advising a cautious outlook on the situation.
Copper prices were down this week, amid concerns that a curbed demand for the metal could cause a supply glut. Chile is the world's top producer for the metal, and China is the top consumer.
