Gold: The Heirloom Companies

Title of Entry: Bronze Railing

Finish Type: Patinated bronze with a wax finish

Total Labor Hours: 375

Materials: Stainless steel, brass, bronze

The client for this project envisioned a front entrance railing with a very natural and organic look. They wanted the design to complement other aspects of the house and surroundings, and asked that it be crafted with the highest quality materials available. Plus, it had to be maintenance-free.

The Heirloom Companies delivered above and beyond, as usual.

All materials for the railing are solid silicon bronze, and every single element was hand forged and fabricated in the shop. The design incorporates four different animals, and the 'tree trunk' looking bases were achieved by layering sheet bronze onto the solid round bar. The acorns were made by creating a clapper dye in that shape, and then power hammering them while still hot. The results: a beautiful, one-of-a-kind railing, a very happy customer, and a Top Job award.

Most companies are familiar with the OSHA-required training on personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers. These rules are in place to help minimize the risk of injury to the eyes, head, respiratory system and other vulnerable areas of the body. While the packaging and educational materials surrounding respirators and other protective face coverings are well known, there is far less standardization for reusable face masks, which have become necessary due to COVID-19 health concerns. That could soon change, as ASTM International is leading the charge to establish standards for these types of masks, including specific requirements for design, performance, size, fit, and overall construction.

According to the 2020 Travelers Risk Index report, fewer companies this year are taking crucial steps to mitigate their risk of cybersecurity attacks compared to last year. This is especially concerning as over 20% of respondents said they had been the victim of a hack. Since the 2019 Travelers survey, the number of companies with at least 40% of their employees working remotely has doubled (largely due to the pandemic), yet only 55% of the companies surveyed said they had invested in cybersecurity insurance.
