Volunteering is a great way to build relationships with other industry professionals, strengthen your leadership skills, and give back to your industry by sharing knowledge or expertise. We strongly encourage NOMMA members to consider serving on a chapter board, a committee, the NOMMA Board of Directors, or the NEF Board of Trustees.

The NOMMA Nominating Committee is seeking volunteer leaders for the next year. The amount of commitment will vary based on the volunteer position, but most do not exceed three hours per month. Board positions do require some travel.

If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, please complete the following volunteer application by Monday, November 30: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CNJQQ3M.

The application should take less than 15 minutes to complete. Please contact Cristina Rodriguez at Cristina@nomma.org with questions

Gold: McLellan Blacksmithing

Title of Entry: Daow Aga

Finish Type: Left natural

Total Labor Hours: 260

Materials: Corten, stainless steel, wood, granite

Daow Aga means "edge of the lake" in the language of the Washoe Paiute Tribe. This unique piece was built in response to an RFP by Tahoe Public Art. Its design conveys the artful expression of the fragility of the ecosystem in Lake Tahoe - the water quality, the flora and the fauna.

The piece is representative of the mountains, trees, granite and waters of Tahoe. The seven plates are representative of the directions north, south, east, west, above, below and within. All of these facets are bound together in one piece, representing the interdependency of all the elements.

The sculpture is nearly 10,000 pounds and stands 12 feet tall, 11 feet long and 7 feet wide. It is constructed of corten steel, embedded with wood and granite, and embellished with waves of stainless steel. The finish is left natural. The piece may evoke images of fragility and nature, but it is also engineered and constructed to withstand sustained winds of 150 miles an hour. It is sure to bring many years of enjoyment, contemplation and beauty to the community.

Abandoned rocket bodies are among the biggest threats to spacecraft, acording to the European Space Agency. Traditionally, risk is mitigated by having launch providers deorbit the rockets after they've delivered their payload - but why waste a perfectly good, humungous metal tube? One space logistics company proposes turning the upper stages of such spent rockets into 'miniature stations.'

"No one has ever demonstrated the core metalworking and fabrication techniques needed to convert a space station in orbit before," as the story notes. But by next May, that could change.

With lost jobs, unexpected emergency and medical bills, natural disasters and uncertainty about what's to come, 2020 has given us plenty of reasons to consider tapping retirement funds to help  ease some financial burdens. But try to resist the urge to take money out, and look for other options you may have instead; you could be saving yourself thousands of dollars down the road.
