The Online Education scheduled for April 16-17 was postponed. NOMMA’s goal is to provide an outstanding learning experience to our attendees. We did not receive the quantity of registrations to deliver on that experience, and made the decision to postpone to a later date.

If you did not register for online education, we request your input as we work to reschedule the event. Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and it will help NOMMA ensure we are meeting your education and scheduling needs.

If you prefer to provide your feedback to a member of the education committee, please click here and we will have a committee member contact you directly. Otherwise, please complete the following survey by Friday, April 30. The survey should take approximately 4 minutes to complete.

At the Annual Membership Business Meeting on April 7, the membership voted to approve three Fabricator Directors and one Industry Partner Director to the NOMMA Board of Directors. Get to know them and welcome them.

Greg Brockman: Greg Brockman is the CEO of Phoenix-based Magnum Companies and has been designing, fabricating, and installing architectural metalwork and large-scale public art projects for over 30 years. From an early age, Greg has had a passion for art and architecture. This was furthered and practiced in architectural college at Arizona State University where he eventually majored in Business Administration with an emphasis in architecture, art, and art history. After graduating from Arizona State University in 1984 Greg continued his career in the construction industry, which then led him back to the Magnum Companies that his father had started in 1979. Based as a manufacturing company Magnum Engineering allowed Greg and his father to develop the business in multiple directions including construction, architectural metalwork, and public art. Greg and the Magnum Companies have been members of NOMMA for over 20 years, have participated in the Top Job competition, given speeches, and hosted the plant tour when NOMMA/METALfab was in Phoenix.

Matteo Gonzato: One might say ornamental metals run through Matteo Gonzato’s blood. His father, Architect Bruno Gonzato, started Ind.I.A Spa in Italy 50 years ago. He was practically raised in the company while his father grew the business. From his earliest years, Matteo started in production, having the ability to understand the very processes of creating ornamental metals, moving into purchasing, logistics, sales and marketing to where he stands today. President of Indital US, Vice President of the Gonzato Group H (in Italy) and responsible for six production and distribution facilities throughout North, Central and South America. Ornamental metals are not just something he does; it truly is who he is, and what he hopes to pass on to his 3 beautiful daughters.

Kara Jerden: Kara Jerden started out with an interest in blacksmithing due to a family friend. She did a two-year apprenticeship with an artistic blacksmith in Indiana focusing primarily on gates and railings. Kara also worked for her father's company, Structural Components Fabrication, in the shop to learn more about the basics of metal working. Then she moved out west to work at Living Design Studios’ shop in Colorado before moving to Las Vegas and started her own fabrication company. Kara returned to Indiana to expand her knowledge in estimating and project management from her father at Structural Components. She quickly realized commercial structural and miscellaneous steel was not as boring as she had initially thought, and became the owner in September 2019.

Michael Migala: Michael Migala is the owner of Migala Metal Designs, a small custom metal fabrication shop located in Harvard, IL since 2005. Michael has over 25 years’ experience in custom metal fabrication. He started his career as a Farrier, which led to an interest in decorative metalwork. Michael earned his Bachelor of Fine Art in Blacksmithing at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. During his time in Carbondale, Michael worked for 5 years at NOMMA member Medwedeff Forge & Design in Murphysboro, IL. He then worked another 5 years for NOMMA member Wonderland Products in Jacksonville, FL. As the owner of a (currently) 2-person shop, he wears every hat; from sales, purchasing, project management, to fabrication and installation. Michael will represent small shops well as he has spent his entire career working in companies with no more than six employees.

The NOMMA Education Foundation (NEF) made the difficult decision not to host the auction this year. Although the auction is not occurring, there are still ways for you to support NEF.

Make a Contribution in the Amount You Would Have Spent at the Auction: The NEF auctions have a great reputation for promoting the spirit of giving and driving fierce competition. Help NEF continue to support industry education and carry on the spirit of giving with a tax-deductible donation in the amount of what you would have spent during the annual auction. DONATE NOW.

Save the Date to Secure One of Five NEF Leaves: NOMMA’s METALfab tradeshow co-located with AFA’s FENCETECH for the first time in 2017 in San Antonio, TX. To commemorate the event, Jack Klahm of Klahm and Sons, and Phil Heermance of Art’s Work Unlimited, collaborated to develop Ascend.

Ascend represents both NOMMA and AFA with ornamental detail, artistry, and fence panels. Each year NEF sells a small number of leaves at the auction. There are 5 leaves available in 2021.

You can secure one of the exclusive leaves and take part in this unique tradition on May 19 at 11am ET / 10am CT / 9am MT / 8am PT. Be one of the first 5 individuals to make a donation of $2,500 or more and to secure one of the leaves.

This month the facilitators, Eric Cuper and Lory Wells, led a discussion with their fellow NOMMA peers discussing the projects of 2020. Members shared what project challenges they faced during the year and what they learned from those projects for the future. There was active discussion about meeting deadlines, how to handle your loyal customers, the cancellation of work, and much more! It was a great platform for members to talk about the past year and share stories reminding each other that they were all in similar situations.

The full recording is available on the NOMMA website under the Events menu. Members must log in to access the recordings. If you have comments or feedback, please send them to info@nomma.org.

Within the last few years, the NOMMA office moved locations. A recommendation we have for our members is to check with their accounting teams or those who issue the payments to make sure the correct NOMMA address is on file. Any time members are mailing something to the NOMMA office, please use the following address:

NOMMA
4100 International Parkway
Suite 2400
Carollton, TX 75007

This update will hopefully prevent delays in your mail being received. If you have any questions, please email info@nomma.org.

Patrick Kapust, deputy director of OSHA’s Directorate of Enforcement Programs, advises companies to use the Top 10 as a guide for their own workplace: take note of the things that OSHA is citing within your industry, he suggests, and use that as a starting place for effective safety practices and training.
