Gold: Gilmore Metalsmithing Studio & Forging Atelier
Title of Entry: Branches of Change
Materials: Steel
Finish: Hand rubbed wax mixture
Total Labor Hours: 1050
This railing was forged from solid bar. The cap and shoe are forged from round stock, 1.75" and 1.375", flattened and then given a weathered surface texture.
The base of the branches are upset to create a flair transition from the shoe to the branch, giving a subtle transition adding to the appearence of the branch growing out of the shoe.
The branches are all made from forged round stock, and the posts are 3.5" square tubing with a weather texture 1/4" x 4" flat bar attached to make them 4" x 4". The edges of the flat bar are beveled to create a crisp corner. Gilmore Metalsmithing Studio & Forging Atelier made the caps with a weather textured band and pressed the pyramid tops in their press. The base for the post to attach to is made from 3" square tubing, plate welded in the bottom and screwed to the floor. The sides of these tubes are tapped for the bottom square head bolts to thread into. Each of the 48" posts weighed about 120 lbs. The sloped sections totaled 15 feet and the horizontal railing is 30 feet.
Congratulations to Gilmore Metalsmithing Studio & Forging Atelier for winning a well-deserved gold Top Job award for this beautiful railing!
