Gold: Owens Welding Inc.
Title of Entry: Elliptical Stair Materials: Steel plates for the pickets and stair sides; bent plate for the stair and risers; pipe for the grab rail Finish: Matte black epoxy Total Labor Hours: 950
This elliptical stair was created for a new build in a high rise condo. The team used a CAD style drawing program to design the stair layout for the owners and architect. Once approved, they started fabrication by cutting and forming each of the stair sections and risers. All nine sections (including pickets and cap rail) were fabricated to fit into a 4' x 8' freight elevator door. It was a major challenge to get each section, and a small crane, into the elevator, and then all the way up to the 57th floor. Each of the nine stair sections were erected and fully welded into place, followed by the addition of the pickets and cap rail. Finally, all welds, welded joints and sections were cleanded and sanded smooth, and a finish coat of paint was the final touch to complete this one-of-a-kind project.
