The monthly Roundtable discussion is going on a hiatus starting in August 2022. The NOMMA Board of Directors, Roundtable Facilitators, and a group of volunteers will work together to revamp and enhance the Roundtable program. The goal is to deliver a program that provides value and relevance to our members. We look forward to presenting a refreshed program in the future.

Gold: Artistic Iron Works LLC Title of Entry: Stainless Ribbon Material: 304 stainless steel Finish: #8 mirror polished stainless steel Total Labor Hours: 520
Artistic Iron Works created this beautiful residential stair and landing guard and handrail from 304 stainless steel, finished to a #8 mirror polish. The pipe rail is 1-1/4", and the pre-polished plate infill is 1/4", water jet cut to design, rolled to match the necessary curves, then re-polished, including all of the cut edges. Since the stairs were built by the framers, there were some inconsistencies that needed to be addressed, including measuring and fitting to site conditions without the help of any drawings or true radii. The team worked hard to get the design and geometry just right on the stairs in order to ensure code compliance and a fluid design – a time-consuming process, to say the least. But the most tedious aspect of the project came at the end: the finishing. Everything is polished to a true mirror finish, with no grain left at all. Industry Week
U.S. manufacturing achieved a post-COVID-19 milestone last month, adding 29,000 new workers, according to the Department of Labor. This number is slightly above the sector’s last pre-pandemic employment numbers, from February 2020. Overall employment in the economy was up 372,000 jobs, as the employment rate (3.6%) and labor force participation rate (62.2%) remained stable. Read More.

In our May/June issue of O&MM Fabricator, we spotlighted the gorgeous stair and ribbon sculpture that won Big D Metalworks gold for Top Job category L – Stairs Complete – Commercial.
While we were able to cover the ‘big picture’ points of the Norfolk Southern Grand Stair project, a significant amount of work went on behind the scenes, involving multiple NOMMA member companies.
With a project as complex, detailed, and ultimately stunning as this one, it probably comes as no surprise that there’s always more to the story.
Read all about it in our digital version of the July/August issue.
