Gold Winner:

Upright Iron Works Inc.
Griffith, Indiana

This piece of furniture was designed by the fabricator. It is made from powder coated 1/4" steel plate. Inspired by steampunk photos on social media, this table was designed and fabricated for a friend's industrial-themed bar and grill. It was originally fabricated to coffee table height, but the low seating didn't fit well in the specified environment. To resolve the issue, it was removed and reinstalled with longer legs so that it may be enjoyed at pub table height. The legs are held on by ridiculously large bolts. They were so large that the fabricator didn't have a wrench big enough. How did the fabricator tighten the oversized bolts? He had to make his own wrench (using the plasma table). If you look closely, you will see the wrench in one of the photos.

When fabricators understand the ins and outs of downdraft table dust collection systems, employee health and safety improve.

For many metalworking applications, a plasma cutter table is a key piece of equipment. This essential tool, however, generates high heat and a lot of fine metal particles. It also produces slag, metal fragments and sparks that can ignite metal dust.

One of the differences between being an entrepreneur and a venture capitalist is that I meet with many more business owners now than I did then. As such, it has become more apparent that many of my struggles as an entrepreneur are surprisingly common. One observation that stands out, probably because it is rarely discussed, is how many founders have relationship struggles with their significant others and families. For me, the brightest years at IronPort were without a doubt the darkest years at home.
