BE PREPARED WITH SUCCESSION PLANNING – Careful planning is a must to ensure you’re always prepared for any obstacle that may come your way. Start planning your succession sooner rather than later, but also remember to take your time in planning. A solid plan is always better than one with missing parts. Some ways to create a solid plan: 1) Get legal advice to protect all parties involved; 2) Look at your tax ramifications; and 3) Check your personal and emotional attachment to the company at the door. Remember, your company is only worth what it’s worth; not necessarily your sweat equity.

Featured Top Job Contest Winner
Category H: Furniture & Accessory Fabrication (Non-forged)
(Metal fabrication including custom castings and cold forged elements with less than 5% custom hand forgings. Includes items such as lighting, tables, chairs, fire screens, fire tools, baker’s racks, window and door grills.)
Featured Gold Winner: Living Design Studios, Lafayette, Colorado
Description of project: Envisioned by the architect, this fireplace required a multitude of materials and finishes. The appearance is a patinated copper finish, however the soffit is steel, the vertical pipes are copper plated aluminum and the bottom is 1/8" copper plate. The soffit was installed first with an internal frame and an opening large enough that allowed access to bolt to the ceiling and wall. Next came the ducting and liner, which [the Living Design Studios team] clad in a tube steel frame. The completed copper mantle, with a texture created by etching with nitric acid, was attached both to this frame and the wall. Precise measurements were taken between the mantle and the soffit. The vertical tubes are cut sections of aluminum tube, welded together from the back side, as needed to install them in sections with concealed attachments. The aluminum was sanded to a clean finish and then plated in copper. The patina was a five-step process.

A majority of Americans (62%) agree that apprenticeships—or "earn while learning" vocational opportunities—make people more employable than going to college, according to the results of the latest American Staffing Association Workforce Monitor® survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults conducted online by The Harris Poll. About seven in 10 U.S. adults say learning a specific trade is better for finding a job than a bachelor’s degree (68%) and that college degrees aren’t worth as much as they used to be (69%). A majority disagree that completing an apprenticeship will limit one’s future employment options (71%) and that earn-while-learning programs generally lead to a lower salary than occupations requiring a college degree (60%).

Projections reveal nonresidential construction spending to grow. Construction spending is projected to grow through 2019, according to a new consensus forecast from The American Institute of Architects (AIA). Spending on nonresidential buildings nationally increased only modestly last year, barely outpacing inflation in building costs. Halfway through the seventh year of continuous growth for the cyclical construction industry, 2018 might have looked to be the year that the industry would enter another recession. However, when polled at the beginning of this year, the AIA Consensus Construction Forecast Panel—consisting of leading economic forecasters— instead saw an acceleration in activity, projecting 4.0 percent growth in 2018 and a nearly equal 3.9 percent in 2019.

Plasma + Aluminum + Water = Hydrogen Explosion Hazard! Dry plasma arc cutting of Aluminum plate may require expensive and complicated dust removal systems. It is also a very loud process, producing high intensity ultra-violet light. Therefore, many companies prefer to cut Aluminum on a water table. Most Aluminum alloys can easily be plasma cut on a water table, Aluminum-Lithium alloys being the exception - see the note below. But even for the majority of alloys that can be cut on a water table, the user has to be aware of a very real and dangerous explosion hazard, and take steps to avoid it.

Everyday permanent markers, glue sticks and packing tape may offer a surprisingly low-tech solution to a long-standing nuisance in the manufacturing industry: making soft and ductile, or so-called ‘gummy’ metals easier to cut. What makes inks and adhesives effective isn't their chemical content, but their stickiness to the surface of any gummy metal such as nickel, aluminum, stainless steels or copper, researchers at Purdue University and the University of West Florida report in a paper in Physical Review Applied.
