1. Experienced shop employees can make good estimators. 2. You need to make sure you read and understand any contract you may sign. This can and will effect any change orders, and payments. 3. Don't be afraid to challenge the verbiage in a contract. 4. Communication between sales and project managers is key. "What exactly was sold" 5. This month, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that U.S. steel mills saw a 1.4 percent decrease in net tons shipped in April over March. April shipments totaled 8,210,425 net tons versus March shipments, which totaled 8,327,990 net tons. Hot dipped galvanized strip and sheets saw a 2 percent increase, cold rolled sheets saw a 1 percent increase, and hot rolled sheets saw a 4 percent decrease.

OSHA's newest revisions will go into effect on July 15. Some key changes include: • Hearing Loss: This process will require cross-referencing of another standard's analysis to help licensed health professionals identify potential cases where hearing loss is due to work-related tasks or conditions. • X-Rays: OSHA regulations will no longer require periodic chest X-Rays for workers who have been exposed to acrylonitrile, coke oven emissions, or inorganic arsenic. While the agency still recognizes these exposures as serious health concerns, it has determined that X-Rays do very little to help identify the presence of lung cancer. •Social Security Numbers: Employees will no longer be required to provide their social security numbers for records such as medical surveillance or exposure monitoring. In total, OSHA is removing the requirement for social security numbers from 19 standards. These include lead, asbestos, bloodborne pathogens, and respirable crystalline silica.

Performance reviews, a longstanding company tradition, are going on trial — and the verdict isn't rosy. A recent study conducted by CEB found that only one in 20 managers reported that they were satisfied with the way their company handled performance reviews. Further, only one in 10 HR executives truly believed that their company's performance reviews were giving the company accurate information about their employees. Despite these dismal findings, the good news is that performance reviews can still be very valuable. Employees overwhelmingly say they do want to know how their employer really feels they are performing. And, most companies genuinely do want to help their employees grow professionally and achieve success year over year.
