National Institute of Standards and Technology A breakthrough by institutions including NIST and KTH Royal Institute of Technology has utilized particle accelerator facilities to examine steel's internal structure during 3D printing. By studying metal solidification with powerful X-rays, the team has determined how cooling rates affect crystal structure, validating a computational model. This model, traditionally used in manufacturing, can now guide metal 3D printing, reducing uncertainty and accelerating its industrial adoption.
