IRS: California Wildfire Victims Qualify for Tax Relief; Various Deadlines Postponed to Oct. 15

On Jan. 10, the Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in southern California affected by wildfires and straight-line winds that began on Jan. 7, 2025. These taxpayers now have until Oct. 15, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.
The IRS is offering relief to any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Currently, individuals and households that reside or have a business in Los Angeles County qualify for tax relief.
The same relief will be available to any other counties added later to the disaster area. The current list of eligible localities is always available on the Tax relief in disaster situations page on IRS.gov.

The American Welding Society (AWS) has announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Carey Chen as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective Monday, January 20, 2025. Mr. Chen succeeds Robert Roth, who has served as Interim Executive Director and CEO.

Mr. Chen brings extensive leadership experience to AWS, and has been an active volunteer with AWS and the AWS Foundation since 2007.
Commenting on his new role, Mr. Chen said, "After nearly two decades of volunteer leadership at AWS, I am honored to take on this new responsibility as CEO. Whether you are part of a NOMMA chapter or you and another NOMMA member want to host an education event, the NOMMA Education Foundation, Inc. (NEF) has a grant to help offset expenses related to the education program.

The NEF Resource Grant is intended to help deliver education and training to the ornamental and miscellaneous metals industry. If you are interested in hosting an educational event, complete an application.

United Steelworkers Union Files Grievances Against U.S. Steel Over Proposed Nippon Sale

The United Steelworkers union has filed filed grievances against Pittsburgh-based company U.S. Steel. The international union, as well as union locals residing in Minnesota, Indiana and Illinois, say that U.S. Steel violated its contracts with the union by entering into an agreement to be acquired by Nippon Steel Corporation in December 2023.

SBA Offers Grace Period to Business Owners With Covid-Era Loans

The Small Business Administration (SBA) has rolled out a 60-day goodwill exception period for some borrowers who still have outstanding COVID-era loans. If eligible, business owners with short-term financial challenges can reduce their monthly payments to as low as $25 for six months. The grace period expires on March 3, 2024.
