Chillicothe City Council committees this week will tackle issues involving pawn shops. Sixth Ward Councilwoman Pat Patrick indicated last March, stems from a request that dates back a few years from Police Chief Keith Washburn that would make it mandatory for pawn shops in the city to record their items to be pawned over the Internet. The shops would use a computer program that could be quickly searched by the police department rather than police having to search manually through record sheets if they need information on something in connection with a stolen item investigation.

Tennessee State Sen. Richard Briggs filed his "Organized Retail Crime theft" bill on Monday in the hopes of combating the drug epidemic. After talking with law enforcement, he was learning people were selling stolen gift cards and using that money to buy drugs. He said groups of people will steal merchandise from a store and then return the items without a receipt to get a store valued card. Briggs said pawn shops will then buy the cards at a discount. He's looking to provide a free statewide database for law enforcement to track these sales. Currently, law enforcement relies on pawn shops to input the information online. Briggs plans to place more regulations on pawn shops.
