Nebraska Bed Bug Bill Introduced

Senator Wayne (D) introduced LB 864 on 1/9/2020 which would require PMPs to inspect and treat for bed bugs when tenants experience them. This bill is largely based off of the Colorado bill HB 1328 that was enacted into law last year. Basically, the tenant gets bed bugs and the landlord must hire a PMP to inspect and treat for bed bugs in most circumstances. It is important to note that LB 864 only applies to cities of the Metropolitan Class, in which only Omaha is classified. NSPCA is working with the Senator and his office to see if there is any chance to expand the scope of the bill to additional parts of the state. At first glance, the bill is written this way for political feasibility. If passed, LB 864 would be a huge win for our industry as PMPs would be a private-sector solution to Omaha’s bed bug problem and help its over 450,000 residents. Great job by Nebraska Vice-SPAR Carl Braun and SPAR Travis Lucas getting this bill introduced.
