On Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies held a hearing for the USDA's budget request for FY 2023. The overall budget request is for a total of $195.9 billion, which is slightly lower than the 2022 FY request of $198.1 billion. Questions from the committee for the Agriculture department are due by May 17th, and the department will have thirty days to follow up. Until then, the department will not be moving forward on the budget plan, and no other meetings have been scheduled yet. The hearing did not directly cover items of interest to the industry, but NPMA is committed to monitoring all elements of the Farm Bill to ensure we are always ready to take advantage of any opportunity to push for preemption.
