Throughout the year, the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) continually utilizes surveys and artificial intelligence tools to support its consumer programming. With the curtain falling on 2023, the team utilized their resources to determine the top pests of 2023 across key categories. According to PPMA’s online survey conducted by The Harris Poll, the most terrifying pests of 2023 (the pest Americans were most afraid of encountering in their homes) were rodents, cockroaches, spiders, bed bugs, stinging insects, nuisance wildlife, and termites. Another survey conducted with The Harris Poll revealed the pests that Americans actually encountered the most in their homes this year, which were spiders, ants, flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, rodents, and occasional invaders (e.g., house centipedes, moths, silverfish, stink bugs, spotted lanternflies).

Additionally, PPMA’s AI database compiled the number of online pest engagements across U.S. states to determine the buggiest states of 2023: New Mexico, West Virginia, Virginia, New York, Louisiana, Montana, and Maryland.

In Memoriam

NPMA mourns the loss of Robert “Bobby” Hammel, who passed away on December 13, 2023, at 71 years of age after fighting a seven-year battle with cancer. The former co-owner of J.C. Ehrlich, Hammel helped build his organization into North America’s largest family-owned pest management company before it was sold to Rentokil in 2006. We invite you to read the PCT obituary highlighting the impact he had on our industry.
