NPMA SPARs and CPCA members were out in force to testify against SB 121 on March 3rd. This bill would have removed preemption in Colorado and banned neonics statewide among many other provisions. The hearing lasted around 9 hours and the pest management industry was on of the last to testify. A vote came shortly after 11 PM local time and failed on a vote of 5-1; the only vote being in favor cast by the bill sponsor. This industry did a very compelling job of explaining the devastating impacts that would occur if preemption were removed.

With spring steadily approaching, the pest control industry is preparing for this year’s termite season. To spread awareness about these infamous pests, the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), the public outreach arm of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), is educating homeowners during this year’s Termite Awareness Week, March 6-12, 2022. This annual event, recognized by Chase’s Calendar of Events, is a great reminder about the costly property damage that termites can cause.
“Termites are notorious for their destructive capabilities. They are responsible for an estimated $5 billion in property damage in the United States each year,” said Cindy Mannes, PPMA Executive Director. “This is the time for our industry to educate homeowners about the complexities of termite infestations. Serious infestations can be absolutely devastating to a home, which is why working with a pest control professional is crucial.”
PPMA will be spreading the word about termites on multiple platforms, from launching media relations efforts to sharing social media content on Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter. PPMA will also share content from their past large-scale termite campaigns: Will They Eat It? and the Tiny Termite House. Industry members can join in by including #TermiteAwarenessWeek on social media channels when sharing content about these destructive pests.
Mainframe subscribers will have access to an exclusive Termite Awareness Week toolkit on PPMAMainframe.org. These downloadable toolkit assets include a customizable press release, social media content, logos and headers, media training documents and high-resolution photography. This toolkit is designed with industry needs in mind, so companies can use these materials in their own media relations efforts.

It’s with great sadness that we share the passing of one our members, William McCauley, also known as Wild Bill. Bill made huge strides in the pest management industry and leaves behind the influential business he founded in 1976, The Bug Man, Inc. Bill left a positive mark on his family, friends, and colleagues. NPMA is lucky to have been a small part of his life.
