April is National Pest Management Month (NPMM), a celebration of the hard work and commitment of pest control professionals across the country. Without the pest control industry, our health and property would be vulnerable to the threat of pests. In recognition of the important work of the pest control industry, the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) is making their NPMM toolkit available to all NPMA members for free! Download this toolkit complete with a customizable press release, social media posts, NPMM logo and social media headers. Consumer engagements around the topic of stink bugs also saw a staggering increase at 443%
To keep a pulse on consumer pest concerns, the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), the consumer marketing arm of NPMA, uses Artificial Intelligence to accurately assess public opinion on a given topic by generating randomized, controlled samples of the population through online media and using text analytics.
In its most recent PPMA Update, a monthly newsletter shared with investors, they shared their February results. With the widespread winter storms across most of the United States, it came as no surprise that rodents saw the highest increase in engagement out of any other core pest in February at 504%. Engagement around the topic of stink bugs also saw a staggering increase at 443% in February. Notably, there was a stark increase in engagement on the topic of groundhogs in Pennsylvania at 4,876%, mice in Georgia at 1,063% and squirrels in Tennessee at 698%. In the context of health and the home, the U.S. population saw a significant increase in engagement on rodents (567.3%), mites (343.2%) and fleas (35.7%) from the previous month.

The United States structural pest control industry generated service revenue of $10,421.25 million this past year, an 8.2 percent increase from the $9,629.78 million measured in 2020, according to the latest market report, A Strategic Analysis of the U.S. Structural Pest Control Industry from Specialty Consultants, LLC. “Industry growth might have been even more robust were it not for the tight labor pool,” said Rich Kalik, Partner. “Nearly 40 percent of the owners or managers surveyed said the inability to hire and retain a sufficient service technician staff inhibited their company’s growth this past year.” About one-quarter of the respondents said the leading challenge to their business was finding and keeping good employees. Despite continued consolidation, there were more than 18,100 pest control firms operating in the U.S. last year.
The NPMA Impact Awards for Women in Pest Management honor and celebrate exceptional women at all levels within the pest management industry. NPMA is actively seeking nominations of women across the field, in any role, including management, technical/service, sales, or office. Recipients will be honored at NPMA’s Women’s Forum, May 3-5, in Nashville, TN and nominations will be accepted through Friday, April 8.
NPMA is proud to support H.R. 7266, which if passed would make pesticide preemption federal law. Introduced on March 29th by Representative Rodney Davis (IL-13), this bill is an excellent step towards seeing this issue fixed in the 2023 Farm Bill. The industry has been advocating for this fix since 2017, and the industry is proud to support federal legislation that will provide regulatory certainty at the state level as well as protect public health, property and food uniformly rather than by locality. Currently, 46 states have preemption, and Alaska, Maine, Maryland and Nevada do not. Original co-sponsors of the legislation include Representatives Rick Allen (GA-12), Troy Balderson (OH-12), Jim Baird (IN-4), Randy Feenstra (IA-4), Reps Jake LaTurner (KS-2), Tracey Mann (KS-1), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-2), Dan Newhouse (WA-4), Austin Scott (GA-8), and David Valadao (CA-21). NPMA will shortly be circulating a letter of support for The Public Health Certainty Act to all state associations, asking them to sign on so that we can demonstrate we are an industry united. For questions about the legislation contact NPMA VP of Public Policy Ashley Amidon at aamidon@pestworld.org.
