Heard From the HillOn May 23rd, EPA triggered its Emerging Viral Pathogen Guidance in response to recent cases of monkeypox. EPA expects that the disinfectants included on its List Q will kill the monkeypox virus when used according to label directions. According to EPA, the virus that causes monkeypox is part of a family of viruses that is relatively easier to kill than other viruses. Though relatively few if any disinfectants are currently labeled for use against monkeypox, as it is a novel/emerging virus, the EVP Guidance is intended to allow registrants to submit data that demonstrates a disinfectant’s ability to inactivate harder-to-kill viruses and be listed as effective against emerging viral pathogens.
