Cindy Mannes, Executive Director of the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) and Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for NPMA, has announced her plan to retire at the end of the year, following nearly 15 years of service to both organizations. "Those who know me, know I love a challenge and I've been so fortunate to spend my career challenging this dedicated board and our family of investors to grow PPMA to new heights and achieve great things together. Our collective impact on the industry has been remarkable, and now, PPMA is credited as one of the leading drivers of our industry's growth," said Mannes. "It's been a true honor and privilege to serve the industry and all of you. I believe in the work you do protecting families, health and property and have been fortunate to be able to share my strong beliefs with the world." The PPMA board expects to name a new executive director in the last quarter of 2022, following PestWorld, October 11-14, to allow for overlap with Mannes' term and ensure a seamless succession.
Last week, our annual Executive Leadership Forum took place in San Diego, California. This year's gathering was a success as the new 2022-2023 Board of Directors met under the helm of incoming president, Justin McCauley of McCauley Services. "Many thanks to Scott Steckel, our outgoing president, and to the 2021-2022 Board for their thoughtful and engaged leadership over the past year. We are grateful for the guidance they provided and look forward to building on their foundation for continued success in the upcoming year," said McCauley.
In addition to the annual P3 planning initiative that charts the strategic course for NPMA, guest speaker Charles Weathers spoke on the topic of diversity in the workplace. Meeting were also held for the Workforce Development Steering Committee, the Board of the Pest Management Foundation, QualityPro, and the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA).
Engagement around rodent sightings in the bathroom up 1,114%
To keep a pulse on consumer pest concerns, the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), and the consumer marketing arm of NPMA, uses Artificial Intelligence to accurately assess public opinion on a given topic by generating randomized, controlled samples of the population through online media and using text analytics.
In its most recent PPMA Update, a monthly newsletter shared with investors, they reported their April results. According to PPMA’s AI research, bed bugs saw the highest increase in engagement out of any other core pest in April at 272%. There was also a stark increase in rodent sightings in the bathroom and kitchen at 1,114% and 318%, respectively. With these figures, it is no surprise that in the context of health and home concerns, the U.S. population saw a strong increase in engagement on bed bugs (664.8%), mice (95.5%), and rats (89.7%) from the previous month. Notably, Pennsylvania showed a staggering increase in engagement on the topics of mosquitoes (2,350%) and spiders (2,275%).

NPMA VP of Public Policy Ashley Amidon spoke to participants at the Pesticide Regulatory Education Program course this week. Participants are regulators selected from applicants across the country and represent pesticide regulatory agencies from 25 states, territories, and tribes. NPMA covered how to communicate pesticide issues to legislators and helped regulators understand how best to share the public health benefits pesticides provide. Participants used WV 4644 as a case study to help understand how legislators can misunderstand our industry and the essential work we do. NPMA continues to build strong relationships with policymakers around the country through speaking to groups like this.
