In May 2022, the British Columbia Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy outlined proposed changes in the Integrated Pest Management Regulation (IPMR) to second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGAR) requirements. The proposed changes, detailed in the IPMR Rodenticide Intensions Paper, would include a ban on indoor use, restrictions on preventative baiting, a term use limit of no more than 35 days at specific sites, and enhanced documentation requirements to demonstrate that an IPM plan is in place when SGARs are used.

The Canadian Pest Management Association provided detailed comments on behalf of the pest management industry in response to these proposed changes.  Included in the comments was a request to the Ministry to delay implementation of these regulations and seek additional constructive engagement with stakeholders to modify the proposed rules to allow for the continued use of these important rodent control products in ways that allow for the protection of public health, food, and property in a wide variety of locations and settings while still being protective of non-target species. More information will be provided as CPMA continues to engage with the BC MOE on this issue. 2022 PSA program garners over 8,000 new TV and radio airings in the month

To educate consumers on the serious threats pests pose to public health, the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), the consumer marketing arm of NPMA, utilizes public service announcements to share this important health messaging with Americans. 

In its most recent PPMA Update, a monthly newsletter shared with investors, they reported their April PSA program results. April brought in over 8,300 new TV and radio airings resulting in over 31 million impressions. PPMA’s campaigns are continuing to receive strong broadcast support across the U.S. with several campaigns currently running in market. Their most recent spring distribution of their “Sick Day” and “Symptoms” PSAs produced particularly strong results across radio and TV with 1,465 airings last month, contributing over 3.6 million impressions. Their fall 2021 distribution continues to see strong airings with another 1,400 airings and 17.7 million impressions added in April.

Fox News and Fox Business Network continue their support of PPMA’s campaigns and stations in many of the top media markets have also continued to air our spots, including stations and affiliates in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Washington, D.C. and other areas nationwide. This past month also brought in new TV and radio station placements in Miami, FL and Portland, OR.

NPMA has received word from EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs that they intend to postpone the publication of the Proposed Interim Decision (PID) for Rodenticides to August or September of this year. The PID has been postponed numerous times as EPA finalizes its proposal for risk mitigation requirements. NPMA has been working closely with registrants and other stakeholders to communicate the importance of rodenticides to protect food, property and public health and will continue to advocate on behalf of the industry on this important topic.
