A 7.8-mile project is under way to protect the Louisiana shoreline from wave-induced erosion. The project used 84,000 cubic yards of recycled concrete to fill nearly 7,500 geogrid marine mattresses that are expected to have a 20-year lifespan. The mattresses will be placed directly on the shoreline and could save up to 110 acres of marsh.
